In the latest attempt to damage the wealth of the richest man in the world, crowds opposing billionaire Elon Musk’s cleansing of the U.S. government under U.S. President Donald Trump started gathering outside Tesla shops across the U.S. and in some European countries on Saturday.
The demonstrators are attempting to intensify a campaign against Tesla dealerships and cars in protest of Musk’s position as the head of the recently established Department of Government Efficiency,or DOGE,where he has shut down entire agencies and obtained sensitive data in an effort to reduce government spending. Musk’s ownership in the electric vehicle company he still runs while working with Trump accounts for the majority of his estimated $340 billion fortune.
Protests in the past have been a little irregular. In an effort to exacerbate a recent drop in the company’s sales, the first attempt was made on Saturday to enclose all 277 of the automaker’s showrooms and service facilities in the United States.
By early afternoon, hundreds to a few dozen protesters had descended upon Tesla stores in Texas, the home state of the automaker, as well as New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, and Minnesota. Social media outlets shared images of demonstrators holding posters that said, “Fight the billionaire broligarchy” and “Honk if you hate Elon.”
Additionally, the goal of the Tesla Takedown movement was to mobilize demonstrators at over 230 Tesla facilities across the globe. The anti-Musk feeling was comparable in Europe, despite smaller turnouts than in the United States.
Outside a Tesla showroom in London, some two dozen demonstrators brandished signs denouncing Musk while passing vehicles and trucks honked in support.
A picture of Musk was placed next to an image of Adolf Hitler doing the Nazi salute on one of the banners during the protest in London. Musk has been accused of repeating this gesture shortly after Trump’s inauguration on January 20.Another sign using an image of Musk’s straight-arm gesture read, “You thought the Nazis were extinct,” and was held by a person dressed as a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Avoid purchasing a Swasticar.
Cam Whitten,an American who attended the protest in London, stated,We just want to get loud, make noise, and make people aware of the problems that we’re facing.
Disgruntled Tesla owners, celebrities like actor John Cusack, and at least one Democratic Party member,Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas, were among the supporters who staged the Tesla Takedown.

“I will continue to yell in the congressional hallways. During an organizing call for Tesla Takedown earlier this month,Crockett stated,I just need you all to make sure you all keep screaming in the streets.”
Opponents of Musk have gone beyond demonstrations to engage acts of vandalism, including setting the automaker’s cars on fire, which U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has condemned as domestic terrorism. During a business meeting on March 20, Musk expressed his disbelief about the attacks and urged the vandals to “stop acting psycho.”
Crockett and other proponents of the Tesla Takedown have emphasized how crucial it is that Saturday’s demonstrations stay nonviolent.
However, early on Saturday morning, authorities were looking into a fire that damaged seven Tesla cars in northwest Germany. Firefighters put out the fire, but it wasn’t immediately apparent if the protests around the Tesla Takedown had anything to do with it.
Customers who purchased Tesla vehicles prior to Musk taking over DOGE are increasingly trying to sell or trade them in,and some have put bumper stickers on their cars in an attempt to disassociate themselves from the billionaire’s attempts to cut back on or close government organizations.
But in his speech to staff on March 20, Musk seemed unconcerned about a prolonged decline in sales of new Tesla vehicles. The company’s Model Y, which is now undergoing a makeover, will continue to be “the best-selling car on Earth again this year,” he informed the employees. Additionally, he projected that by the end of the year, Tesla will have sold over 10 million vehicles globally, up from the current sales of roughly 7 million.
“The future is extremely bright and exciting,” Musk stated, “but there are times when there are rocky moments, where there is stormy weather.”
Investors first viewed Musk’s partnership with Trump as a good thing for Tesla and its long-term plans to establish a network of self-driving cars when Trump was elected president last November.
Between Trump’s win on November 5 and his inauguration on January 20, such optimism contributed to a 70% increase in Tesla’s value, generating an extra $560 billion in wealth for shareholders. However, investor concerns about the Tesla backlash, the company’s underwhelming sales in the US, Europe, and China, and Musk’s time spent managing DOGE have caused almost all of those profits to vanish.
In a research note before to Saturday’s demonstrations, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives stated, “This continues to be a moment of truth for Musk to navigate this brand tornado crisis moment and get onto the other side of this dark chapter for Tesla.”
