Anora wins everything at the Oscars. March 03
With five Oscars, including best actress for breakout star Mikey Madison and a record-breaking four for director Sean Baker,Anora was the major winner.
Madison,a relative newbie, plays a New York stripper who develops feelings for the son of a wealthy Russian in the frenzied drama.
She called winning the Oscar for best actress a “dream come true” and repelled Demi Moore’s challenge.
Baker, who directed, edited, wrote, and produced Anora, became the first individual to win four Academy Awards for a single picture.
I’m Still Here received best foreign prize, Flow won best animated feature, and Kieran Culkin,Adrien Brody, and Zoe Saldaña were among the other winners that evening.
Madison,25,stated in her speech: “This is just unbelievable. Even though I grew up in Los Angeles,Hollywood always seemed so far away,so it’s truly amazing to be standing here in this room now.”
“I want to honor and recognize the sex worker community,”she continued. One of the pleasures of this amazing experience has been meeting the women from that group, and I will continue to support and be an ally.”
Quentin Tarantino, who had previously starred Madison in a minor role in his movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, gave the best director trophy.
In response to Tarantino’s award, Baker said,”If you didn’t cast Mikey Madison… there’d be no Anora.”
In his best director speech, Baker praised cinemas and thanked the Academy voters for “recognizing a truly independent film.”
“Where did our passion for movies begin? “At the cinemas,” Baker remarked.”Watching a film in a theatre with an audience is an experience.””Right now the theater-going experience is under threat, independently owned theaters are struggling, and it’s up to us to support them.”This is a community experience that you simply don’t get at home, and it’s more vital than ever at a time when the globe can feel very divided.
“This is my battle cry: Filmmakers, keep making films for the big screen,” he said in closing. I’m positive I will.Distribution companies, please prioritize my films’theatrical premieres.”
The first individual to win four Oscars for a single picture is Baker. In 1953,Walt Disney did win four awards in one night, but for four distinct movies.

Since 2003, when he became the youngest winner of Best Actor for The Pianist, Brody had not received an Oscar nomination.
“Acting is a very fragile profession,” he stated.”It looks very glamorous, and in certain moments it is,but the one thing I’ve gained in having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective.”Furthermore, anything can go,regardless of your professional status or accomplishments. And the knowledge of that, together with my thankfulness for continuing to perform the work I love,is what makes this evening so memorable.”
“I’m here once again to represent the lingering traumas and repercussions of war,and systematic oppression, and antisemitism and racism,”Brody continued, refusing to be played off during his five-minute address.
Additionally,I pray for a world that is happier, healthier, and more inclusive. And if history can teach us anything,it’s to keep hate in check, in my opinion.
